Spyware and Adware are the software programs that intefere your browsing activity. You have noticed while browsing pop ups appearing while browsing these are example of them. What do they try to? Actually adware try to sell a product or increse traffic to their sites. Spyware try to invade your privacy, your personal information like information which you submit on forms while browsing. They make it possible for hackers to hack your computer. Some of them are to direct you to some site so that the site gain traffic. These programs are downloaded to your computer while browsing but you may not know.
To prevent these you can install pop up blockers like the one that come with yahoo or google toolbars for free. I have such a toolbar on my computer now no more annoying popups.
Second is to install a sypware/ adware remover tool on you PC and check your PC at regular intervals.
